Patna Metro Project Gains Momentum: Key Updates
The Patna Metro Rail Project, one of the most ambitious infrastructure developments in Bihar, is progressing steadily and gaining significant momentum. Launched to ease traffic congestion and modernize the city’s public transport system, the project is being implemented in two corridors and is expected to transform urban mobility in the state capital.
According to recent updates from the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), which is overseeing the construction, major civil work is underway in several key areas. The first corridor runs from Danapur to Mithapur via Patna Junction and will cover around 17.9 kilometers. The second corridor stretches from Patna Station to the New ISBT and spans about 14.5 kilometers. Together, these two corridors will have over 20 stations, with a mix of elevated and underground routes.
Tunneling work has commenced near Gandhi Maidan and PMCH (Patna Medical College and Hospital), where modern tunnel boring machines (TBMs) have been deployed. The construction of elevated pillars is already visible along Ashok Rajpath and Boring Road, signaling visible progress to city residents.
The metro system is designed to be energy-efficient and environmentally friendly, with plans for solar energy utilization and smart ticketing systems. The coaches will be equipped with air-conditioning, real-time tracking, and surveillance features to ensure comfort and safety.
Officials from the Bihar Urban Development Department have confirmed that trial runs on some sections are expected by late 2026, with the full network likely to be operational by 2027. Land acquisition and utility shifting, which are often major roadblocks in infrastructure projects, have been largely resolved due to coordinated efforts between the state government and DMRC.
The project is expected to create thousands of jobs, both directly and indirectly, and stimulate economic growth in the region. Improved connectivity will benefit students, professionals, and daily commuters, drastically reducing travel time and dependence on road transport.
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has emphasized the importance of the metro for Patna’s future, calling it a “game-changer” for urban development in Bihar. Public awareness campaigns are being conducted to keep citizens informed about traffic diversions and safety around construction zones.
As work intensifies in the coming months, the Patna Metro is poised to become a landmark achievement in Bihar’s journey toward modernization and sustainable urban growth.
